RSVP…….They need to cover up, their lack of candor is showing

We have spent quite a bit of time researching and debating this entity with the Lake County Commissioners.  It is a long convoluted story, but we will try to be brief..

First, here is a schedule showing the Senior Levy Distributions for 2013 – 2018:
Senior Levy Distributions 2013 – 2018 (2)

RSVP stands for “Retired Seniors Volunteer Program”, and they are an employment agency for seniors that want to volunteer in Lake County.  It is connected somehow with the Willoughby-Eastlake school district.  We are not sure why, and no one has been able to give us an answer that is understandable.  Here is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/rsvplc/

When researching the distribution of the Senior Levy funds last year, we noticed that RSVP had received over $619,000 for the period 2013 – 2017.  We asked them for their financial information, and what we received gave us the idea that they had displayed a “lack of candor”.  We suggested to the Commissioners that all future funding be given to the Lake Council on Aging, where we know that it will go to good use.

When we saw the distribution of the Senior Levy funds for 2018, we were aghast….yes, aghast I tell you, that not only were the funds not given to the Lake Council on Aging, but RSVP received an INCREASE to $125,000.

This is more than most of the Seniors Centers received!  I wonder if the Senior Centers know that they are playing second fiddle.

So for the past six years, RSVP has received in excess of $744,000 to be an employment agency for volunteers…..that seems very wasteful to us, since many of the same volunteers are already volunteering for the Council on Aging.

We found out at today’s Commissioners’ meeting that the program is based on “disbursements” by RSVP. The invoices are given to Jason Boyd, County Administrator, and the County pays them from the RSVP funds held by the County.  We asked Mr. Boyd for a full accounting of the $744,000 in disbursements made by the County on behalf of RSVP.  There was some mention of 2 or 3 employees, but the information was sketchy, at best.  We were told that it would be provided to us.  Stay tuned, we are not going to let this one go unanswered.

(Comment: We took a video of today’s meeting, and  we will post it when it is sent to me.)

(Comment: It is obvious that Commissioner Troy is the huge supporter of RSVP, and he did say that Cristen Cane, Director of RSVP, did call him about our request for financial information.  He publicly said that the  taxpayers in Lake County get much more in benefits than the $744,000 that the taxpayers paid.  My comment was that we would like the Lake County taxpayers to weigh in on this subject.  What is curious to me is Commissioner Troy knew what we were asking for last year, they had the information, but did not volunteer it. — Hmmm, they may want to cover up, because their lack of candor is showing….just saying…)

  1. As you well know, politicians many times assume that you will just go away. In that case, they don’t need to follow up.
