The following is an email that we sent to Michael Matas, Lake County’s Budget Director asking for information on the Local Government Funds received from the State of Ohio. You will see that we have ‘started the ball rolling’ by letting local government officials know (we cc’d the County Commissioners on this email) that we are very concerned about the out of control real estate taxes, and we are considering exercising the citizens’ rights under the Ohio revised code to submit an ‘initiated statute’ requiring the State to stop their unconstitutional use of real estate taxes as a source of funding for public schools.
We know that this will be a daunting task, but we see no other solution since our elected officials will never react to this problem without pressure from concerned citizens.
We are continuing to research governmental actions that are causing the alarming increase in real estate taxes. You may know that our concern is that we are pricing seniors and others living on fixed incomes out of their homes that they have worked all their lives to achieve.
We have heard from several sources that officials at the State level have balanced the State budget on the backs of our local communities. We are trying to find the facts and figures that can support that statement.
Can you please provide me with any information on the local government funds that have been received by Lake County municipalities from the State of Ohio for 2008 versus 2018?
If there have been any other decisions made by the State of Ohio, such as unfunded mandates, that have caused the County to increase the real estate tax burden on the citizens, please let us know.
We are seriously considering exercising the citizens’ rights under the Ohio revised code to submit a proposed statute for a statewide vote to eliminate the unconstitutional use of real estate taxes as a funding source for all of Ohio’s public schools.
Thank you for your assistance.
