Staggering statistics on mental health issues….

I read some interesting statistics in the 2017 Annual Report of the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services.

# of Adult Americans            Mental Health Issue                        % of Population
2.4 million                                Schizophrenia                                         1.1%
6.1 million                                Bipolar disorder                                      2.6%
16.1 million                               Major depression                                    6.9%
42.0 million                               Anxiety disorders                                  18.1%
That means that they estimate that 28.7% of Americans have some type of mental health issue.

In FY 2012, the Ohio Department of Medicaid spent $1.9 Billion on Behavioral Health issues, and in FY 2017 they spent $3.0 Billion!!!!

The preferred treatment for drug addiction was also mentioned in the study:
“Treatment that includes medication, along with counseling and other supports, is often the best choice for a person with opioid addiction. Medication allows the individual to regain a normal state of mind, free of constant cravings for the drug. It reduces problems of withdrawal and helps people manage their addiction so that the benefits of recovery can be maintained. There are three main choices
for medication to treat opioid addiction: methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. People can safely take these medications as long as needed – a few months, one to five years, or for life.”
